Date Auction Hype

February 16th, 2013

Picture

We loved the write up Eco News Network posted on their site to help build the hype for our last Garbage Gone Glam event! Read Allyson Koerner’s post below or access it through the Eco News Network website via link: https://econewsnetwork.org/2013/01/garbage-gone-glam-presents-glam-date-auction/

January 30, 2013

Garbage Gone Glam, an organization and business dedicated to beautifying the Earth, is holding a very important eco-friendly date auction benefiting the planet and encouraging others to live a green lifestyle.

Garbage Gone Glam (GGG) was first founded in 2008 by Kristen Alyce. According to her website, “Inspired by a genuine desire to raise environmental awareness in an innovative way, Kristen fashioned her first dress entirely out of fashion magazines and plastic bags.”

Ever since then, her cause has taken off, and she continues to spread the green word, just like GGG is tomorrow on Thursday, Jan. 31 with its Glam Date Auction.

Held in West Palm Beach, Fla., the date auction will show off GGG’s latest eco-wear worn by bachelors and bachelorettes.

In addition to sending the important message that we can reuse items like plastic bags, plastic water bottles and old magazines to create fashion masterpieces, all proceeds go directly to environmental causes.

One of these causes is the Resource Depot, which is a reuse center that collects clean, safe and reusable donated items. These items would usually end up in landfills, but thanks to the Depot, they are distributed – for free – to teachers, daycares and other educational-related organizations.

As its website reads, “Garbage Gone Glam’s mission is to raise awareness of environmental and health issues facing our ‘throwaway’ society.

Through fashion shows, environmental expositions, and other events we draw attention to the volume and variety of trash thrown away every day. We aim to inspire a little change in the lives of our audiences and those who join our mission.”
If you’re looking to participate and contribute to GGG’s eco-friendly mission, check out its website, and attend the date auction tomorrow night.

Eco-Celeb of the Week: Lauren Conrad

January 26th, 2013

Picture

Eco News Network presents our favorite eco-celeb of the week. We love seeing what celebrities are up to, and that doesn’t mean when it comes to movies, television or music albums, but with how they’re giving back to the planet. This week, reality star and fashion queen Lauren Conrad caught our eye. She not only has major talent in the fashion world, but she is also making a name for herself in the eco-friendly community. Check out how she protects Mother Earth.

What do you think of when you hear the name Lauren Conrad? Most likely, it’s MTV’s popular reality TV series “The Hills.”

Even though that’s what she’s loved and known for, she’s been making a name for herself in the fashion world, and for good reason. Not only does she have great taste, but she also incorporates the environment into some pieces.

In 2012, she launched her very own eco-friendly accessories line called XO (eco). Lauren designed the line with help from eco-conscious company Blue Avocado and Repreve, a recyclable material company.

The line offers affordable accessories like a beauty clutch, a cover for your straightener, a lunch kit and a cafe tote, among others.

Each product is made from Repreve’s recycled material, which is crafted from reclaimed, used plastic bottles. It is then recycled into yarn for items like Lauren’s.

For example, her beauty kit is designed from 6.5 recycled plastic bottles, and her hot iron bag is made from three recycled plastic bottles.

“As a designer, I hope that my choices for this collection raise awareness around the importance of environmental sustainability and green products. Eco-friendly is not a fad–it’s the future. And with my new line, you will have some cute eco options to pick from  ,” she says on her website.

“At the end of the day, I encourage you to get inspired to join me in this green adventure by opting to go eco chic. Together we can create the ripples of awareness that can inspire a positive impact on our beautiful oceans and environment of which we will be supporting organizations that focus on ocean recovery efforts through the collection.”

Lauren’s line just shows that you can sport cute accessories and protect the planet too.

In addition to fashion, the 26-year-old is a huge animal lover. Just this past November, Lauren adopted an adorable pooch named Fitz. She now has two rescue dogs; the other named Chloe.

We love seeing young women like Lauren dabbling in the eco-world and animal rescue community. What will she come up with next? We can’t wait to see!

Garbage Gone Glam Joins Pinterest

September 20th, 2012

Picture

Garbage Gone Glam has just created a Pinterest page! It’s filled with tons of photos that do what we love most, inspiring a little change! There are boards about the Garbage Gone Glam models, photo shoots, and our uniquely created dresses. You can even see pics of the Glam team backstage and on site of an event.

We have an array of DIY photos like this Birdhouse, that get your creative juices flowing. Just take some old books that you no longer read and create this birdhouse perfect for a unique home decor idea. You can also check out our Green boards and see how to be green for the environment and your body. Our boards can show you how to reduce and reuse old materials or items and turn them into simple solutions for your home.

Another great find for example, was this old oatmeal container, which would have ended up in a landfill, but instead redesigned into a hair accessory holder that keeps headbands on the outside and barrettes on the inside.

Follow our page at Garbage Gone Glam USA and get inspired! Don’t forget to check back here to see more pictures and find information about our events. www.GarbageGoneGlam.com

Photographer Grayson Hoffmann Joins The Glam Team

September 8th, 2012

Picture

Today at 5 AM Designer, Kristen Alyce, and Stage Director, Lindsay Lauren, woke up and glammed up for a seat in the hot spot – in front of the camera! The morning did not consist of any models waiting in line for hair and makeup, instead it was all about the leaders of this crazy operation.
For the first ever staged photo shoot Alyce and Lauren came together with the incredibly talented photographer, Grayson Hoffman. Hoffman has been a photographer it seems his entire life with his camera being his extra set of eyes. We had the pleasure to work with him at 3 different locations here in Palm Beach, FL.

The photo above is a sneak peak at the first location with one of Glam’s water bottle couches. The couch consists of over 750 bottles, the ottoman created from about 250, and the side table with just about 50 – totaling over 1,000 water bottles collected and reused. Trash in coastal cities often ends up in our oceans, and ocean animals are hurt and killed by ingesting small bits of residual plastic. Small ocean life can get stuck in the cap rings of plastic water bottles or in plastic six-pack holders. An animal may mistake a plastic bottle for prey and try to eat it, with disastrous consequences. If that isn’t bad enough, when water bottles are not recycled, brand-new ones must be made to keep up with consumer demand. According to the Earth Policy Institute, 1.5 million barrels of oil are needed to make enough bottles to meet the U.S.’ demand for bottled water. (LiveStrong.com) And we wonder why we pay so much for oil these days. It’s all about supply and demand. Increasing recycling efforts — or consuming more tap water and bottling your own — cuts down on the need for raw materials and fossil fuels to make new products.

Stay tuned for photos from this shoot. It was a great day we can not wait to show you! December premieres our first ever Garbage Gone Glam Calendar 2013 and will be shot entirely by Hoffman. We look forward to him joining our team! Follow what we’re doing on Facebook, Twitter, or LinkedIn!

August Photo Shoot Begins

August 7th, 2012

Picture

Our model, Julia Grace, the face of Garbage Gone Glam amazed us again with her ability to showcase dresses made entirely of garbage and look beautiful while doing it. This shoot was extremely special to us at Glam, we had a whole new crew working on this particular shoot. The photographer, Alecia Hayles, Makeup Artist, Danielle Bartlett, and student intern made it all come together.

We began on a road near the Fairgrounds in West Palm Beach, FL. The traffic was incremental so the whole team had to run out, snap some photos, and run quickly back to the side of the road. Cars were inevitably slowing down to see what was going on and gaze at all 6 feet of Miss Julia. Some shots were also taken off to the side of the road in a very luscious environment. We loved the contrast of the old maps against the wild brush.

The team then journeyed to downtown West Palm Beach. Here we shot behind the ever so popular Clematis Street. Julia climbed in high heels to the top of a restaurant dumpster and posed to perfection. The caution tape mini really popped with this backdrop. We found a construction site on the road itself and asked the workers if we could interrupt… they were quite willing to help out!

We ended the day in the Palm Beach Library children’s department. Julia sported a gown made from discarded library books… primarily the Dr. Seuss collections. This was her personal favorite, as we were finally in air conditioning after being in the 97 degree south Florida heat for 2 hours, but regardless she loved the design and fit of this dress.

We had an amazingly productive day together as a team. Glam always finds a way to make work exciting! Stay up to date here on our NEWS page as we post behind the scenes photos, events, travels, and interviews.

Proud to be Woman

dvfwomen

March 22, 2012

Every day with Glam is a day to celebrate women for their imagination, spirit, and incredible love for others, so when it comes to International Women’s Day we get really excited to celebrate.

“It is my mission in life to inspire women, to empower them,” says Diane Von Furstenberg, “and that is what March 8th is all about.”

Although March 8 has come and gone, I still want to recognize the wonderful women that make up our company here at Garbage Gone Glam. Our models, aspiring to be nurses, accountants, and teachers, make our mission come to life. They wear the dresses that represent our passion and our goals, all while looking beautiful down the runway. Our style team’s creativity needs to be recognized. The hair and makeup that occurs for these events is pure talent. These natural abilities just pour out of these women.

With that said we, as a team, are joining the world in this annual effort to inspire women and to celebrate their achievements. If you have started a new business or achieved something of great success please write to us so we can applaud you in all you do as a woman.

To further support International Women’s Day and the empowerment of women around the world, a Proud to be Woman tote and iphone case will be sold at Diane Von Furstenberg boutiques and DVF.com.

Proceeds from the sale of all Proud to be Woman products will benefit Vital Voices, an organization that is dedicated to empowering women worldwide.
