Connecting In A Coffee Shop-Garbage Gone Glam

My journey Thus Far with Garbage Gone Glam- by Melissa Parkos

It was a typical Tuesday morning. Scanning emails, calling clients and of course drinking my extra hot dark roast coffee. A couple seats next to me were two women doing the same as I – but I could tell there was something different about them. We all went along our business crossing things off our lists and staring at computer screens.

I was trying my best not to ease drop (at least not too obvious) to their discussions. After a while we ended up striking up a conversation of what our businesses were. When Kristen first described Garbage Gone Glam below is what I envisioned (but of course more fashionably dressed and some killer high heels on):

Garbage Gone Glam

Is this what they do at Garbage Gone Glam ?!

It was obviously much more and much bigger than that. A PR/Marketing company that is environmentally conscious and innovative… say what?! I was extremely impressed and blown away by their unconventional approach to an industry that can often be clouded by too many options and frequently unimpressive outcomes. First, the dresses! They are not just something Kristen designs and tapes together – they are F$%&@* awesome! I was mostly impressed by the potential of what Garbage Gone Glam can become and is on the road of becoming… Needless to say, I wanted to be a part of it!

A couple weeks of talking and running ideas past each other Kristen and Michelle have allowed me to jump on this crazy, glamorous, marketing fashion train. Within the two weeks of knowing them I have seen a fashion runway show, started working on a magazine cover launch party, witnessed a story on them go national in press coverage and they have even been mentioned in Cosmopolitan Magazine. Let me say this again; It has only been TWO weeks!

I am so incredibly proud of them and even luckier to be associated with this company. Here is to the marriage of Fashion and Marketing (and saving the environment one dress at a time)!

A Very Glam Christmas Photo Shoot

crazy mike, garbage gone glam, courtney quinn, olivia matz December 27th, 2014

December in South Florida could arguably be “the most wonderful time of the year”. The weather is picture perfect, the holidays are just around the corner, and there are plenty of exciting events to attend. The glam squad took advantage of this lovely season in a recent Christmas photo shoot during Art Basel in Miami. Kristen Alyce, the founder of Glam, created what initially looked like plain white paper dresses. Upon first glance, they would seem like a stark contrast to her normally very bold and colorful designs. But in true Kristen form, things were about to get very vibrant.

Teaming up with the talented director, photographer and stuntman Mike “Crazy Mike” Gaboff, the Glam team took sustainable fashion (and Christmas) to the next level. Using red and green paint, the team got to have an all-out spatter paint party! Adding in glitter and tinsel made for an over the top shoot. Models Courtney Quinn and Olivia Matz had a blast being our human canvases.

Being outside in the Miami Art District created a buzz of excitement from everyone passing by the spectacle. Several cars pulled over to take pictures of the event. Some people walking by even joined in for an impromptu photo and dance party with the models. Led by Mike’s creative direction, this made for a very high energy shoot.
The team was also accompanied by Lindsey Sessa, owner of shopLdesign.com. Her beautiful handmade jewelry and headpieces added some extra glam to the photo shoot. Lindsey also used her photography to capture the fun from all angles. The extravagant makeup was done by Lisa Nowicki.

A special thanks to Scott King and Michelle Fink for their assistance with the behind the scenes work on this very merry photo shoot.

Eco Celeb of the Week: Emily Deschanel

March 29th, 2013

Picture

Eco News Network presents our favorite eco celeb of the week. We love seeing what celebrities are up to, and that doesn’t mean when it comes to movies, television or music albums, but with how they’re giving back to the planet. This week, leading lady Emily Deschanel caught our eye. In addition to her fabulous TV work, Deschanel also is an avid supporter of the planet, especially as a new mom. Check out how she protects Mother Earth.

“Bones” fans know and love Emily Deschanel as Dr. Temperance Brennan aka Bones on FOX’s hit drama series. Did you also know that Emily is loved for her planet-friendly lifestyle? As an actress, wife and mother, she makes sure to benefit the environment in every way possible.

Let’s start with motherhood. Before she gave birth to her son, Henry, Emily was highly criticized for her veganism, but that never made her stray from her cruelty-free beliefs.

“Saying no to meat makes me feel stronger inside; I feel aligned with my morals and ethics. I still have to defend myself because people don’t understand it. As a pregnant woman especially, people will say to me, ‘You must eat meat and dairy.’ You really have to tap into your self-esteem whenever people try to convince you you’re making the wrong choice,” she said.

She’s kept with that attitude, as she has made a meat-free environment at home for her son.

Henry is currently living off a vegetarian diet, and following in his mother’s footsteps, “We are raising Henry vegetarian; he will be mostly vegan and always have a choice in the matter, but we will educate him about why we make the choices we do with our food. My husband isn’t one hundred percent vegan. I read ‘Disease-Proof Your Child’ by Dr. Fuhrman, and think it is a must-read for parents trying to raise a healthy child.”

In addition to Henry’s diet, Emily also ensures their home is safe and non-toxic. She uses the utmost of safest products, “I am always on EWG’s [Environmental Working Group] Skin Deep website looking up products to use on Henry. It rates them so you know how toxic something is. I love Earth Mama Angel Baby. Their products are safe, smell amazing and actually work! I was already using natural products in my home and on my body, but having a child made me even more concerned about everything.”

For years, Emily has shown her planet-friendly colors, and its great to see as a new mom she’s staying true to who she is.

In addition to motherhood, Emily also brings her environmentalism to work., “I always push for the animal and environmental issues being highlighted and when it is appropriate it finds its way into the show.”

For example, in July 2012, “Bones” featured an episode about the harsh realities of keeping exotic animals as pets. Furthermore, the show even filmed an episode about chicken farming, which hit close to home for fans.

“When someone tells me they stopped eating chicken because of the ‘Bones’ factory farming episode we did last year, I consider that a small victory,” Emily said.

Her animal activism never goes unnoticed either. In August 2012, Emily was honored by Mercy for Animals for her farm advocacy work.

Emily is one of many actresses making a difference in the green world, and it’s exciting to wait and see what she’ll do in the future.

Eco-Celeb of the Week: Rachel Ray

February 7th, 2013

Picture

Eco News Network presents our favorite eco-celeb of the week. We love seeing what celebrities are up to, and that doesn’t mean when it comes to movies, television or music albums, but with how they’re giving back to the planet. This week, chef and talk show host Rachael Ray caught our eye. Not only is she a wonderful cook who knows food well, but she is also an animal lover and supporter of the environment. Check out how she protects Mother Earth.

Author, chef, talk show host, wife and pet owner; these are just a few of Rachael Ray’s successes. Of course, she is most popular for her cooking skills, but what some might not realize is she is just as popular for her eco-friendly qualities.

The 44-year-old is an avid animal activist, and isn’t afraid to take a stand for animal rights. It all starts at home for Rachael with her pit bull, Isaboo.

Isaboo is basically Rachael’s child, and she treats her like one. “I make a dog-friendly version of almost everything that we make for dinner, so she gets a lot of home-cooked food. She likes barley or orzo with chicken stock, carrots and parsley. She likes parsley a lot,” she told PEOPLE. The pit bull also sleeps in bed with Rachael and her hubby, John.

The love she has for Isaboo extends to all pups and animals. Just recently, Rachael donated $500,000 to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals help animals caught in Superstorm Sandy. She also shipped four tons of her Nutrish pet food.

Speaking of Nutrish, Rachael started the pet food line in 2008, which offers all-natural food and treats for dogs. The best part is all proceeds go directly to Rachael’s Rescue – started by the chef – to provide food, medical supplies and treatments for animals in need.

She’s also working on a Nutrish line for cats. What doesn’t she do for animals?

In addition to her amazing animal work, Rachael also benefits the planet in other ways. For example, it was reported in 2007 by NYPost.com that she will only drive Prius hybrids. Also, she’ll only be driven around in a Prius.

Rachael also supports recycling. Her magazine, Every Day with Rachael Ray, is printed on 85 percent recycled paper, and production uses 12 percent less paper per issue.

It’s great to see a celebrity chef dabbling in the green world, and we can’t wait to see what Rachael does next! Hopefully, other celebs will start following her footsteps.

Date Auction Hype

February 16th, 2013

Picture

We loved the write up Eco News Network posted on their site to help build the hype for our last Garbage Gone Glam event! Read Allyson Koerner’s post below or access it through the Eco News Network website via link: https://econewsnetwork.org/2013/01/garbage-gone-glam-presents-glam-date-auction/

January 30, 2013

Garbage Gone Glam, an organization and business dedicated to beautifying the Earth, is holding a very important eco-friendly date auction benefiting the planet and encouraging others to live a green lifestyle.

Garbage Gone Glam (GGG) was first founded in 2008 by Kristen Alyce. According to her website, “Inspired by a genuine desire to raise environmental awareness in an innovative way, Kristen fashioned her first dress entirely out of fashion magazines and plastic bags.”

Ever since then, her cause has taken off, and she continues to spread the green word, just like GGG is tomorrow on Thursday, Jan. 31 with its Glam Date Auction.

Held in West Palm Beach, Fla., the date auction will show off GGG’s latest eco-wear worn by bachelors and bachelorettes.

In addition to sending the important message that we can reuse items like plastic bags, plastic water bottles and old magazines to create fashion masterpieces, all proceeds go directly to environmental causes.

One of these causes is the Resource Depot, which is a reuse center that collects clean, safe and reusable donated items. These items would usually end up in landfills, but thanks to the Depot, they are distributed – for free – to teachers, daycares and other educational-related organizations.

As its website reads, “Garbage Gone Glam’s mission is to raise awareness of environmental and health issues facing our ‘throwaway’ society.

Through fashion shows, environmental expositions, and other events we draw attention to the volume and variety of trash thrown away every day. We aim to inspire a little change in the lives of our audiences and those who join our mission.”
If you’re looking to participate and contribute to GGG’s eco-friendly mission, check out its website, and attend the date auction tomorrow night.

Eco-Celeb of the Week: Lauren Conrad

January 26th, 2013

Picture

Eco News Network presents our favorite eco-celeb of the week. We love seeing what celebrities are up to, and that doesn’t mean when it comes to movies, television or music albums, but with how they’re giving back to the planet. This week, reality star and fashion queen Lauren Conrad caught our eye. She not only has major talent in the fashion world, but she is also making a name for herself in the eco-friendly community. Check out how she protects Mother Earth.

What do you think of when you hear the name Lauren Conrad? Most likely, it’s MTV’s popular reality TV series “The Hills.”

Even though that’s what she’s loved and known for, she’s been making a name for herself in the fashion world, and for good reason. Not only does she have great taste, but she also incorporates the environment into some pieces.

In 2012, she launched her very own eco-friendly accessories line called XO (eco). Lauren designed the line with help from eco-conscious company Blue Avocado and Repreve, a recyclable material company.

The line offers affordable accessories like a beauty clutch, a cover for your straightener, a lunch kit and a cafe tote, among others.

Each product is made from Repreve’s recycled material, which is crafted from reclaimed, used plastic bottles. It is then recycled into yarn for items like Lauren’s.

For example, her beauty kit is designed from 6.5 recycled plastic bottles, and her hot iron bag is made from three recycled plastic bottles.

“As a designer, I hope that my choices for this collection raise awareness around the importance of environmental sustainability and green products. Eco-friendly is not a fad–it’s the future. And with my new line, you will have some cute eco options to pick from  ,” she says on her website.

“At the end of the day, I encourage you to get inspired to join me in this green adventure by opting to go eco chic. Together we can create the ripples of awareness that can inspire a positive impact on our beautiful oceans and environment of which we will be supporting organizations that focus on ocean recovery efforts through the collection.”

Lauren’s line just shows that you can sport cute accessories and protect the planet too.

In addition to fashion, the 26-year-old is a huge animal lover. Just this past November, Lauren adopted an adorable pooch named Fitz. She now has two rescue dogs; the other named Chloe.

We love seeing young women like Lauren dabbling in the eco-world and animal rescue community. What will she come up with next? We can’t wait to see!
